There are 220 students in the Mandan High School band program. Students are placed by ability into one of three bands; Concert Band III, Concert Band II and Concert Band I. Concert Band I, under the direction of Mr. Jon Baumann, is an auditioned performance organization. Students from Concert Band I, II, and III audition for this group in the spring of the year. If selected, all students are expected to take private lessons with either the band directors or another qualified instructor, perform in NDHSAA solo and ensemble festivals, organize and manage the Big Muddy Band Festival, participate in the Fall Invitational Band Festival, and audition for placement in the NDMEA All-State Organizations. Concert Band I has performed at Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, North Central MENC, NDMEA Teachers Convention and other special events throughout North Dakota. Concert Band I was also named Governors Band for 2018.
